Lodwick Charles Hartley papers, 1930-1983 [manuscript]

The Lodwick Charles Hartley papers contain materials from Hartley's career as a professor in North Carolina State University's English Department. Materials include a number of Hartley's publications, including books, articles, poems, short stories, and book reviews, such as William Cowper: A List of Critical and Biographical Studies Published from 1895 to 1949 and the second printing of William Cowper: The Continuing Revaluation. The poetry partially consists of "Correspondence by Sonnet: Quotations and Photograph," printed in Margaret Lowry Butler's Poems in Retrospect (1983). Also included is biographical information, including a booklet entitled Lodwick Hartley: A Profile of the Man; newsclippings about the English Department; and a 1967 speech Hartley delivered as part of the Adventures in Scholarship Library Lecture Series. The papers also contain materials from the 1962 court case Thomas v. State Board of Elections, during which Hartley testified as an expert on the English language.

South Carolina native Lodwick Charles Hartley (1906 - 1979) received a B.A. from Furman University in 1927, an M.A. from Columbia University in 1928, and a Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1937. He joined the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (now North Carolina State University) faculty as an assistant professor in 1929.
